History of Bhatpara

Once Bhatpara was one of the foremost centers for learning Sanskrit language, which is unarguably one of the oldest languages of India. However, with the passage of time, especially after arrival of Mughals and British, Sanskrit witnessed considerable decline and so did Bhatpara’s reputation as a foremost center for learning for Sanskrit language. This considerable decline though never stopped Bhatpara from producing prominent Sanskrit scholars even during British and Mughal era. One such prominent Sanskrit scholar was Srijib Nayatirtha, who was born in Bhatpara town in year 1893 and passed away in 1992. During his lifetime Srijib Nayatirtha received many awards and honors for his mastery over Sanskrit language. His unparalleled achievements in Sanskrit language is surely testimony of Bhatpara's rich contribution to Sanskrit language.

Bhatpara Municipality is solely responsible for looking after day-to-day civic administration of this town. Important responsibilities rendered by Bhatpara Municipality includes supplying water to all households, collection of property tax, construction of new roads and maintenance of sewerage/drainage across entire town. Panch Mukhi Hanuman Mandir : Located very near to Kankinara Bazaar, this Lord Hanuman Temple is surely one of the most beautiful temples in Bhatpara town, if not in entire North 24 Parganas District. Its architectural beauty as well as its religious sacredness draws hordes of devotees every day. Madrail Hanuman Mandir : This is another very famous Hanuman Temple of Bhatpara town. Although not as beautiful as Panch Mukhi Temple, but it is surely one of the most sacred temples of this town. It is located just 2 kms away from Kankinara railway station.

Panch Mandir : Panch mandir’s literal translation in English means five temples. This is actually a complex of temples that was actually constructed nearly 400 years ago. Economy of Bhatpara was once very heavily reliant on Jute processing plants, but over past few decades most of these Jute processing plants have been shutdown.
